Mandatory CPD for property agents to begin in June 2025

Following the recent passage of the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024, from June 2025 property professionals in Queensland will be required to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) each year.

The 12-month transition period will allow the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), in consultation with industry and community representatives, to identify appropriate CPD sessions for inclusion in the CPD scheme. It also allows industry members to make any adjustments required for a smooth transition.

Who is affected?
Under the new rules, the following property professionals must complete CPD each year:

  • real estate agents
  • real estate salespersons
  • real property auctioneers
  • resident letting agents.

Who chooses the CPD sessions?
The OFT will determine the annual CPD requirements. An advisory panel will be established to advise the OFT on acceptable CPD sessions each year. The panel will include industry peak body representation, community representatives and a training specialist.

Other government agencies are also able to advise the panel on possible CPD sessions where relevant.

What is required?
Subject to future consultation with the advisory panel, it is expected the OFT will initially require property agents to complete two CPD sessions each year:

  • One session will be chosen from a list of ‘CPD’ versions of subjects in the national property services training package.
  • One session will be chosen from a list approved by the OFT.

Why is CPD now mandatory?
Many agents already choose to complete CPD to keep their skills up to date or as part of an industry body membership. The new requirements mean all relevant property agents will need to complete annual CPD requirements, lifting the professionalism of the industry as a whole and building greater community confidence in the sector.
